Discarded materials become art in Future Fiestas

Future Fiestas is a project created by Filipino artist Leeroy New and BANG-ON Collective with the Blacktown community. Discarded materials, including waste plastic, become costumes and sculptures that form part of a procession involving families and audiences. It is co-presented by Blacktown Arts. Imagining with your companions how the shapes of different materials could become works of art can make your visit more engaging.

Choose your making and procession dates

The free making programme Fiesta Aliens! runs from 10 to 23 January, from 10:00 to 16:00, at Palm Grove in Darling Harbour. It is a drop-in programme, so you can visit without booking. No art experience is needed to make wearable sculptures from recycled materials or contribute to works for the procession.

The public Future Fiestas processions take place on 9 and 23 January. The official page describes them as running from 17:00 to 18:00, but the first selectable time on the same page is shown as 16:00 on 9 January. Recheck the start time before setting out. All times are local to Sydney (AEDT).

Take a relaxed break at The Yard

The Yard is an outdoor space with free admission at Barangaroo Reserve, operating from 8 to 24 January. Pop-up food outlets and bars are planned, with further details to be announced. Find the making venue, procession venue and The Yard on a map in advance, and allow plenty of time for travel and meals. Food and drinks must be purchased separately from admission, so set aside a budget for them too.

According to the festival’s terms, ticket prices include booking fees and GST, but a transaction fee may be added at checkout. Refund rules apply to cancellations and schedule changes, so check them before buying.
